Since Graduating in 1994 From the Fine Crafts department of VCU, I have pursued glass art as a career. In 1995 I founded Pearson Glass Studio as a furnace working studio and operated it until 2000. Upon the birth of my children, I scaled back and focused on smaller scale work through lampworking. During this time, I was also a Scientific glass blower for Research Glass Inc. where I got to develop my torch skills and learn from some older masters of glass working. In 2005 I began to teach lampworking both to local beginning students and around the country with advanced skills workshops for more advanced artists. I have had the honor of being a speaker at several of the International Society of Beadmaking conferences along with The International Lampwork Festival in Japan. My current work focuses mainly on Handmade Marbles . After 30 years as a part time artist and a full time work from home parent I am working to expand sales and focus more on growing the art business.
I primarily make fun glass marbles and sculptures using traditional lampworking techniques. Using glass rods and a torch the glass is melted into a sphere as I design the colors for the surface work. Most of my work features surface work patterns using a variety of dot stack techniques.
Throughout my career as an artist, my work has become smaller and more complex. Several years ago, I began to focus on the marble as a template from which to explore my ideas. Throughout my career as an artist, my work has become smaller and more complex. Several years ago, I began to focus on the marble as a template from which to explore my ideas. Using the Art Glass Marble as a form has allowed me to explore texture, pattern and color within a framework that is limitless. My goal is to create an object that fills the viewer with wonder and draws them in to the imagery. I also try to create objects with both modern and historical references that come together in fun new ways full of humor and wonder. My inspirations are diverse and range from tribal masks, far east mandalas, day of the dead artwork, and patterns found throughout history. Teaching my love of glass working has also been a focus of my career. I teach both a local art center where I teach beginning skills, along with workshops around the country to more advanced artists. Often, I think I learn just as much from the students as I get a better understanding of how to explain both the physics and artistic aspects of lampworking.
